Product Description
“Race Across America,” is award winning filmmaker Stephen Auerbach’s first documentary to focus upon the world of cycling. This exciting film won the Boulder International Film Festival. It is the story of a great American adventure and spectacular endurance event that invites cyclists to race against one another from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States. The event is non-stop and the winner makes this incredible journey in less than 10 days. They ride across the continent, facing monumental challenges (physical, mental, geographical) while trying to ride for up to 48 hours at a time without taking a sleep break. With a multitude of colorful characters (including Ultracycling legend Jure Robic) facing superhuman challenges, the film attempts to answer the question: Why Race Across America on a bicycle with no sleep for no prize money!” The answer is found in the hearts of these Average Joe warriors and non-professional cyclists. This makes for an unforgettable film that will expand your sense of what is possible.
“Somewhere in the darkness of a person’s existence they confront what scares them, what unnerves them, what makes them wonder about their very next step. This is what the film Race Across America captures by its essence. Whether you ride long distances or not, heck, even if you haven’t ridden a bike in 20 years, buy this film. It embodies the deeper struggle of our human existence as we strive, struggle and learn from our failures.” In this film we see ourselves in the personalities (riders and crew) as they endeavor to persevere in something so engaging that it tips the scales of common sense into the abyss.”

“A handful of grueling, yet distinctly human moments grace Auerbach’s film. These scenes encapsulate the soul of one of the cycling world’s toughest and most misunderstood events.”

“If you’re a cyclist – you MUST see this movie. A race, or ride, like this is for only a special few but… all cyclists will appreciate the unbelievable dedication and effort these riders make and will find the movie extremely interesting and totally enjoyable. But even non-cyclists, even completley sedentary folks, will find the sacrifice, endurance and sheer cussidness of these riders enthralling. They literally ride ’til they win or drop trying. Watch this film while riding on your trainer. The time and miles will fly by as you become intimately connected with the riders involved, as if you are a part of the team. Not only is the story extremely compelling but the film is beautiful to watch. The filmmakers do a magnificent job of bringing out the drama and human-interest behind this ride and the amazing people that do it.”

EXCEPTIONALLY INSPIRING MOVIE!
Race Across America is an exceptional movie documenting the feats of several athletes in one running of this 20+ year old ultra-endurance event. I found the movie to be quite inspiring. While it focused on a handful of racers, detail about the races’ history was given, allowing the uninitiated to understand how the event began and has evolved over the years. Emotional, energizing and intense, this movie has what many other documentaries lack; Relatable human experience.
If you are looking for a great movie to view with your family, friends or to give you a focus while spinning on the stationary trainer this winter season, pick up Race Across America. You will not be disappointed!

I enjoyed Race Across America and Bicycle Dreams immensely. I became interested in the race and even went to the checkpoint closest to my home. They pass by and are gone. The films really give you a sense of what this event is all about. The effort is beyond comprehension but this gives you a brief glimpse. I do the RAIN (Ride Across Indiana – 160 miles in a day) If I did 18 more and added 100,000 feet of climbing and deserts and prairie winds, hailstorms, bridges, traffic, 50% night time riding, etc, I could do RAAM.

I purchased this DVD for my husband as a gift at Christmas. It was everything I had hoped and more. It captured the attitudes, stress, and challenges of the riders. If you are a cyclist or even a wanna be, I would definitely recommend this DVD.

Somewhere in the darkness of a person’s existence they confront what scares them, what unnerves them, what makes them wonder about their very next step. It embodies the deeper struggle of our human existence as we strive, struggle and learn from our failures. Sports are a great metaphor for life at large, the greatest of these are endurance sports, with Race Across America taking you into a greater understanding of what it means to reach for the brass ring, no matter how big, no matter how small. In this film we see ourselves in the personalities (riders and crew) as they endeavor to persevere in something so engaging that it tips the scales of common sense into the abyss. As I said, it’s just like life. So if you don’t learn something about yourself and about life by simply watching this film, well, you need to do it again because you weren’t paying attention. Life changes in a heartbeat, in one moment you think all is lost, that perseverence is not to be had, then, in a moment, something happens. The tailwind of good news or encouragement comes along and your legs are fresher, your energy restored and you find the courage to dig deep…to go one more mile. This is what is embodied by Race Across America and its creator Stephen Auerbach. It is fantastic.

Both of Auerbach’s RAAM films are so well done, it’s more like a first-hand experience than just entertainment. Riveting, heartening, and heart-wrenching all at once. Not just for cyclists, in fact these films may help non-cyclists understand the passion that drives us. Highest possible recommendation.
