Some say Mont Ventoux is the hardest of all the mythical Tour de France climbs and rightly so. Despite having only being used in the Tour de France since 1951 (many of the giant climbs of the Pyrenees and Alps date back to the early 20th Century) it is probably the most famous and feared of the great climbs of the Tour. Unfortunately, the mountain gained even more fame because of tragedy when, in 1967, top British rider Tom Simpson collapsed and died nearly within reach of the summit. Mont Ventoux has been the site of the some of the greatest King of Mountain battles in cycling history. This artwork by Michael Valenti perfectly captures the insanity of the torturous climb while keeping to a playful tone that embodies the love of cycling – which is all about challenge, suffering and ultimately the self satisfaction that comes with the earned accomplishment of a hardworking aspirant.
